You only need to reopen if it's closed.

Mark, you are allegedly on vacation in a place where drinks have little
umbrellas in them. Put down the cell phone immediately and resume your
travels.
Thanks for the input, everyone.

Up until the case is closed you can just do the lien avoidance. Cases usually close within a few days after discharge. Otherwise you'll need to file it concurrently with a motion to reopen.
I have template I can give you if you need.

You file a motion to re-open. If you're nice I'll give you one of my
motions to re-open with the same fact pattern.

Jay;
There are only a few days between discharge and case closing. I've seen
it happen the next day that the case closes after a discharge. So I'd
hurry if you want to file the motion, and the clerk's should see it and
not close the case if you beat them.

I've got a case in Santa Barbara that requires me to step in
post-discharge to avoid lien that should have been avoided ... and
would have been, had the debtor not been in pro per.
Do I need to file a motion to reopen, or can I simply do the avoidance
without reopening?
Thanks in advance.
