Redacted SSN on tax returns to Trustees
FRBP 9037 addresses redaction of the social security number for documents
filed with the court. The trustee has a right to have the full social
security number as it may be needed to contact the taxing agency or for
other investigative purposes.
In most instances the trustee will hand the tax return(s) back to the
debtor at the 341 hearing and will not retain a copy. Privacy came up at a
recent CLE as the reason many trustees did not want PDF versions of tax
returns mailed. It is easier and more certain that a trustee will not
retain private information of the debtor if he or she only has the paper
copy and it is handed back. I believe the rule is that it will be
destroyed by the trustee after it is no longer needed.

Agreed. Trustees already receive the SSN anyway right off the bat, like creditors. The notices/documents etc. on docket are the ones redacted because they're public records.

I believe that you only need to redact documents filed with the Court. The Trustee already knows your client's full social security number so you are not providing something the he doesn't already know. Different trustee's have different policies on redaction (some want it redacted, some don't and most don't care).
