My only complaint is that Dennis didn't post snow reports while he was away at Vail not tending to the listserv.

I vote that we release Dennis from his bonds. However, we still need to
have the website person delete the e-mails that come in that are
duplicates and problems (or so Dennis tells me). His example was 140
e-mails of the same e-mail because someone held the wrong key down for a
couple of minutes. Anyway, I think we can agree upon protocol and now
police ourselves. My vote, only one but at my age maturity has come
slowly.

I think Dennis has done a tremendous job from Day 1 in all aspects of his
affiliation with our group, both in terms of managing e-mails, providing
MCCLE, providing his input, advice, and overall inspiration, as have many
others in this group.
That having been said, I have to completely agree with Donny, the moderation
is, at best, a huge drain on the value of the listserv. We have a board
of directors. The Yahoo Group sign up can have an opening explanation of
the protocol and that if anyone violates said protocol, they can and will
be removed from the listserv and have to pay into the Jim King St. Patrick's
Day slush fund (OK, maybe not the last part). Seriously, as David said
the other day, we are all adults here and a collegial unit of similarly
situated professionals, and if we need to be monitored and censored, we gots
bigger problems than the listserv.
I vote for immediate unmoderated status.

Donny et al:
The CDCBAA listserve was set up when I was president in 2004. We had no computer people and I just set it up. We did not set up a protocol, so we set it up to moderate people as they joined, then move people to unmoderated status.
I had some help for the first few years doing the moderation, but have been the only person moderating for the last couple of years.
Unfortunately, this means if I am not near a computer some of the messages are not sent out as quickly as you may like. Last week I was in Vail and there were apparently a few miffed about their emails not going out.
I wrote to Jim, the King of Bk, this week and told him he may want the board to review the situation. We can have immediate unmoderated status, but we do not have a method, on Yahoo, to continuously post the protocol, like Nacba does. Of course, that won't really solve the problem, cause when people break the protocol, some action has to be taken or the protocol dissolves.
Jim has been telling me this year that this year's board is setting up a listserve which will be on the group's website, not Yahoo. I am hoping that happens quickly as moderating has been a difficult, time-consumingjob and I have now had it for five years.

Since listserv protocol and etiquette has been addressed, I have a question
thats been on my mind and I know at least several other members who have
pondered this as well:
Why do our posts require moderator approval, and why does it take as long as
2 days (sometimes) for such approval to happen?
One of the great things about the NACBA listserv is that you can get a
question answered within minutes. If you need to wait a day for your
question to get posted, and then wait another day to see the answer, the
utility of the listserv is drastically reduced.

The nacba version is entirely inappropriate for our group.
1. Our group is MUCH smaller
2. Our group is MUCH more cohesive
3. Our listserve specifically excludes trustees, judges, US. Trustee
employees and certain others.
4. The volume of emails from our group is a fraction of what flows through
the nacba system and people can sort out the wheat from the chaff by
themselves.
5. While certain emails are, in my view, inappropriate, ie those which are
racist, sexually explicit, religious, political or libelous, people are
mature adults and can regulate themselves. Those who post inappropriate
material will face appropriate social pressure to modify their behavior or,
if it is really bad, appropriate legal action by those who may be offended.
If people get tired of extra thank you's and congratulatory notes, that too
will be handled by social pressure. We do not need a systemic babysitter.I favor the broadest possible opportunity for free expression. Case in
point, I was not the least bit offended by Ken's recent post about a certain
Chapter 7 Trustee - in fact I thought it was of value to the group because
it served to educate some of our less experienced members. I don't want
that type of post (or subsequent posts by that same person) censored by a
committee of "right-minded" individuals.
Remember, we all work with, and see each other on almost a daily basis.
That alone guarantees civility. We are adults and can handle this without
regulating ourselves to death.
