I agree with brother Jonathan in that the client needs to know that their case has deadlines and requirements and the consequences of being late and not having docs. I take RARA fees in full for emergencies and it either motivates them or sends them on their way.

Don't do emergencies. The only thing that makes it not last minute is all
the work you put into harranging the client to get you the documents.
Sorry you going through it. I'm going through it RIGHT NOW. hahaha.
They are emergency people because they wait for the last minute for
everything. I also found that putting a notice in their retainer agreement
that if a case gets dismissed because they didn't provide documentation
when requested they will have to start all over and pay me more money
usually starts a fire under their behind.
Thanks!

Having worked with emotionally challenged students for 12 years before beginning my law practice, I think the clients are the best part of the work! However, like my former students, I have learned to plan ahead and inform my clients what I will need before I need it. Some are slow (because they also have lives), but most respond within a couple of days or the same day to requests for documents.

Somebody said, "the practice of law would be great if not for clients."
I deal with this issue all the time, and improving the process is foremost
in my mind. I find that at least I can waste less time on this if I
delegate more.

It seems like pulling teeth with some of the emergency C13 clients in trying
to collect documents from them which inevitably leads to more continuances
or late nights at the office as docs come the day they're due. Anyone have
any tips they can share to help make the document collection process less
painful?
