Renay, is the transcript that you get, the tax account transcript that
allows you to do the dischargeability analysis?

IRS Practitioner's Hotline no longer taking live calls

Hi there:
I know this is a little late to the party. . . But if you go on IRS.Gov and
while your client is in the office there is a link where the taxpayer can
request the transcripts ONLINE and you can download them in that moment. I
have been able to get transcripts instantly and by year. Client will need
a little bit of information off their last tax return which they should
have in their possession when they come see you. And its free and you
don't need a POA because client gets it right there in your office.
Sometimes if client doesn't have correct information, then they will get
sent to them in mail and it takes three or four days.

Sam:
Have you ever just sent in the 4506t yourself? What is the advantage of having a service center send in the 4506t for you?

So I signed up with a company called Lenders Processing Service. I have the client sign a 4506T, upload to LPS and last 4 years of transcripts are usually available to download within a few days. Their charge is, I believe, $14 for the first year and a sliding scale upwards, which I pass on to the client, with a little extra for my time. It's very clean - and the fact that the client has to pay usually causes them to "find" the tax returns that they previously couldn't find.

To Steve Lever:
Form 4506-T allows you to get the account transcript. Form 4506 is for the tax return.
To Sam:
I always try to get 10 years of account transcripts. Some debtors have very old tax debts, and you want to make sure that they are dischargeable. There are fact patterns that could make a tax debt from 2005 nondischargeable today (very late filing, followed by a collection due process case). And you can never take the client's word for it that he actually filed his return.

I can't recall ever having a need for copies of more than 4 years of previously filed returns. But I only do 7s and 13s.

CIN Compass will order your transcripts also. It is bankruptcy software and case management program.

what about using the 4506 form? It really is better in the long run, you won't get years and years of tax information about a long lost client.

You get access to the transcripts for your client about a week after you fax the power of attorney form to IRS. Signing up for this is quite difficult; it took me about two months and two hour-long phone calls with the help desk to navigate the approvals needed. But once you're set up, there is a great feeling of accomplishment when each newly-requested transcript takes only three minutes or less to secure.

You can also get transcripts online, through the Transcript Delivery Service found on e-services. You get access to the transcripts for your client about a week after you fax the power of attorney form to IRS. Signing up for this is quite difficult; it took me about two months and two hour-long phone calls with the help desk to navigate the approvals needed.
