Public Counsel's Debtor Assistance Project is looking to place potential clients to place with pro bono attorneys to discharge student loans in bankruptcy. We're looking for clients who have already received a discharge, and who meet the criteria for dischargeability under the Brunner test:
* Past: They have made a good faith effort to repay their student loans
* Present: Based upon their current income and expenses, they cannot maintain a minimal standard of living for themselves and their dependents if they are forced to repay their loans
* Future: Their current financial situation is likely to continue for a big part of the repayment period
Here are some characteristics of an ideal candidate (but these are not set in stone):
* Over 50 years old
* Has private student loans
* Attended a for-profit school that provided little to no educational benefit
* Has a disability
If you have any referrals, either you or the client can contact Vikki Padilla at dap@publiccounsel.org, or (213) 385-2977 x183.
Thanks,
Christian
