Ex-wife is co-signer on cards; not her debt or responsibility...

Hello all!
Met a client today, seemed like a VERY simple case. About to wrap it
up when he says those words "There's a complication..."
He was divorced about 4 years ago -- had his business attorney do the
divorce and it was not done well, according to him. This was in
Virginia -- he is now in California and ex-wife in Hawaii.
Three cards have been showing up on wife's credit report. I am
suspicious she may have been a co-signer only, but would prefer an
easier way to fight this. One card had debt from a business venture
PRE-DIVORCE. However, although it was NOT WRITTEN DOWN, both parties
assumed husband would repay this one.
The other 2 cards had a zero balance at divorce, all debt is
POST-DIVORCE. Parties did not even live in same state. Clearly wife
is NOT accountable for that debt.
We cannot file until we get wife off as a co-signer and want to make
sure to have proper documents explaining WHY this is not fraudulent
when he files BK.
Any suggestions? My first thought was to contact his divorce attorney
in VA except that attorney did not know what he was doing (first and
only divorce is my understanding) and they left on acrimonious terms.
I'd appreciate any and all suggestions! Thanks!!

"Like the witness protection program!"
"Exactly."
