The only time I dedicated to the process, which is as arduous as David indicated, was bleating "yes" whenever I was asked to authorize the IRS to talk with Cynthia. When Cynthia moves on she will have to instruct me or her successor how to use this thing. But it works great, as long as your debtor has filed during the most recent three years. You have to input the return adjusted gross income from one of the three most recent years as one of the validation parameters when you attempt access, but if your client hasn't filed in the last three years, then you can't validate your access. If you want a transcript of 1099's and W-2's for the years your debtor hasn't filed tax returns, so he can file returns and pick up whatever the IRS knows about him, then you best make a conference call to the IRS with your client on the line because your power of attorney is worthless in that context. How do they know it's actually your client on the line with you? That is for you to experience yourself.

Relevant to Elmer's comment: I have tried to navigate these waters to get
into the electronic system. The system is horrible. Also, if you don't use
it often enough, they revoke your privilege. The passwords constantly have
to be changed, etc. etc. I spent hours on the phone one day with one of
their techs trying to work through the system and that was AFTER I spent the
better part of 2 days attempting to do it on my own. It still wasn't
working so I had to call back the next day.
I have given up using the online system and gone back to the faxed
transcript request.

since last May lawyers have been able to electronically obtain account transcripts directly over the internet. Before that only persons who filed 5 tax returns a year for clients were able to do that. Good luck trying to figure out how to qualify for electronic access to the information at Fort Knox, but it's possible. One problem, however, is that if the taxpayer hasn't filed for the last three years, you have to go manual to get earlier transcripts or to get a transcript of all W-2's and 1099's which have been filed against him/her/it.
