Why appeal a motion for reconsideration?

In the motion for reconsideration you add legal arguments, facts, etc., Maybe there is a whole new list of authorities. As a result, you appeal BOTH, the denial of the motion for reconsideration and the underlying motion.

What is the rationale for appealing a motion for reconsideration? Why not appeal just the underlying motion?
