For those of us who couldn't make the Saturday conference, is there a way to
get the materials or info (mp3 recording?)?

Members,
Thank you everyone that attended the Saturday meeting. Once again, we
had a very lively program and excellent attendance. Thank you to Eric
Clark and David Lally for taking time out of your Saturday to present
both sides, and thank you to Patrick Green for your simplified version
of the road map to mortgage securitization!
Please mark your calendars for the November 7th Annual Calvin Ashland
Award Dinner. We really need the membership to support the dinner.
Contact Peter Lively to make a reservation and for more information
where to forward your deposit. Spouses and significant others are
always invited. It is our one big event at which we recognize, this
year, the Judge of the Year, that person who has promoted consumer
interests. The judges, trustees and legal community recognize our
giving of the Calvin Ashland Award as our contribution to the
bankruptcy legal community.
One result of that recognition is Judge Zurzolo's presenting Recent
9th Circuit Cases with Jon Hayes last month, and Judge Donovan
appointing David Tilem, Dennis McGoldrick and me to the Local Rules
Committee. And with regards to the Local Rules, we are asking that
each of you let us know your "Local Rules Pet Peeves," giving us those
LBR that you particularly like or dislike. We will take those
suggestions to compare the recently proposed LBR and offer suggestions
to the judges that are of interest to you as consumer bankruptcy lawyers.
Another plus for our group is the Second Annual Dinner with the BAP
Program being arranged by your Special Events Chair, Peter Lively.
This year it is planned that a program on BAP Nuts and Bolts will be
the topic. About half of the attendees on Saturday raised their hands
that they had argued an appeal. So, this program is for all members,
whether you have or have not argued a BAP appeal. The date is being
nailed down and an announcement for a June date will be made shortly.
The First Quarterly Newsletter for 2008 is available on the cdcbaa
website www.bklawyers.org, which has been updated through your
Publicity Chair's efforts, Jon Hayes. Visit the new look website and
look for some exciting new features that your Board has approved and
that will be launched shortly; in particular a member profile access
portal. Also, take a look at the Committee assignments for your Board
and contact any Board Member to get involved.
The Board position for the Pro Bono - Self Help Desk Committee has a
new chair, Justin Harelick. Congratulations and thank you, Justin!
Steve Bryson accepted assignment as the Self Help Desk Coordinator and
Keith Higginbothim is the Debtor Assistance Program (DAP) Coordinator.
Congratulations and thank you, Steve and Keith! The Self Help Desk
is expanding out of the Valley where Judge Tighe, along with many
members of the cdcbaa championed its cause. Judge Donovan will be our
Judicial Liaison in Los Angeles.
The Inn of Court continues to be championed by the cdcbaa. Anyone who
belongs will tell you that it is actually fun; not like one of those
rubber chicken "other bar" events! You get to have dinner with the
Judges, Trustees, Law Students, Law Clerks and your fellow bankruptcy
lawyers, including some veterans, including the 1898 Act; that
bankruptcy law that predated the Code and BAPCPA. All of these people
are valuable sources of knowledge and experience! Contact your Board
members: Byron Moldo, Jim King or Brett Curlee about Inn of Court
membership.
Look for next monthly MCLE Program on March 22.
Again, as your President, I want to personally thank each and all of
you for attending our MCLE, supporting the cdcbaa and getting involved
in what in all likelihood will be an exciting year to be a consumer
bankruptcy lawyer.
Best regards. Lou Esbin
