You are absolutely correct that any version of "type[s] of debt[s]" can be grammatically correct.
You wrote: "I am sure that I have never knowingly met one of these passionate people . . ." They do exist, though apparently they keep their passion to themselves when in your company. Perhaps I am a bit odd in my penchant for steering a conversation towards grammatical questions - the more recondite the more entertaining - so these lovers of error reveal themselves to me.
I feel a little like Wilbur on the old Mr. Ed show. Ed would never talk when someone other than Wilbur was present, so only Wilbur was privy to Ed's unusual equine skill.
